For many families across Harrow, the weekly shop has become more than a routine errand. Rising living costs mean that everyday essentials such as nappies, baby wipes, toiletries and food items can place significant pressure on household budgets. For parents already balancing childcare, housing costs and other financial commitments, even the most basic purchases can become difficult decisions.
Whilst these challenges are often discussed through statistics and headlines, behind every number is a family trying to provide the very best for their children. For some households, a pack of nappies, a bag of rice or a supply of baby wipes can make a genuine difference during a difficult week.
It was with this in mind that Al-Wahab Foundation partnered with FACT (Families in Action Together) on Friday 5 June 2026 at Wealdstone Methodist Church to support local families through the provision of essential household items.
The event brought together volunteers, community leaders and local residents with a shared goal: ensuring that families facing financial pressures had access to practical assistance, support and encouragement. Through the collaboration, enough supplies were provided to benefit approximately 120 families, helping to ease some of the everyday challenges many households continue to face.
The event was a reminder that meaningful support does not always need to come in the form of large-scale interventions. Sometimes the greatest impact can be achieved through simple acts of kindness and practical assistance.
Throughout the day, families visited the venue to collect essential supplies and connect with volunteers. Parents were welcomed into a warm and friendly environment where support was offered with dignity and respect. Conversations took place between volunteers and families, stories were shared and many parents spoke about the challenges of managing rising household costs while providing for young children.
Rather than simply collecting items and leaving, many families took the opportunity to engage with the wider support available through FACT, learning about services and resources that may benefit them in the future.
The atmosphere throughout the event reflected the strength of the local community. Families from different backgrounds, cultures and faiths came together in a shared space, demonstrating the diversity that makes Harrow such a vibrant and welcoming borough.
The collaboration between Al-Wahab Foundation and FACT was built on a shared understanding that local organisations can achieve more when they work together.
By combining resources, local knowledge and community networks, both organisations were able to maximise the reach and impact of the event. The partnership ensured that support was delivered through a trusted local organisation already deeply connected to the families it serves.
The event was organised by Aghileh Djafari and Jackie, whose dedication and commitment have helped FACT become a respected and valued source of support within the community.
Their leadership and passion were evident throughout the day. From coordinating volunteers and organising supplies to welcoming families and ensuring everything ran smoothly, their efforts played a vital role in the success of the event.
As part of the initiative, Al-Wahab Foundation donated a range of essential items to support local families.
The donation included:
Whilst these may appear to be simple household items, they represent necessities that many families rely upon every day.
For a parent caring for a young child, nappies and baby wipes are not optional purchases. For families working hard to manage household budgets, basic food items and toiletries are essential costs that cannot be avoided. When those costs continue to rise, many households are forced to make difficult choices.
The support provided through this initiative helped to ease some of that burden.
The supplies distributed were sufficient to support approximately 120 families, meaning that hundreds of individuals, including parents, carers and children, directly benefited from the generosity of supporters and volunteers.
For some families, receiving these items meant one less expense to worry about that week. For others, it provided reassurance that support was available within their local community.
Whilst this event provided an opportunity to deliver practical assistance, it also highlighted the remarkable work carried out throughout the year by Families in Action Together (FACT).
Based in Wealdstone, FACT is a community-led organisation dedicated to supporting families with young children through a wide range of services and initiatives.
Each year, the organisation supports more than 1,500 families, with over 100 families engaging with its services every week.
Its work focuses on tackling poverty, improving health outcomes, supporting child development and reducing social isolation. These issues are particularly important within communities facing economic challenges and barriers to accessing support.
The organisation currently supports families speaking 37 different languages, ensuring that language barriers do not prevent people from accessing help when they need it.
This inclusive approach has helped FACT build strong relationships across the community and become a trusted source of guidance and support for families from a wide range of backgrounds.
The impact of organisations like FACT extends far beyond the distribution of essential items.
By supporting families during the early years of a child's life, organisations can help improve long-term outcomes for both children and parents.
Families who feel supported are often better able to engage with healthcare services, access educational opportunities and build stronger support networks within their communities.
FACT works closely with the NHS, Integrated Care Boards (ICBs), schools, local authorities and voluntary sector organisations to improve access to services and address health inequalities affecting local families.
The organisation has also participated in nationally recognised research programmes and public health initiatives, helping to shape services that better meet the needs of families.
Its work has generated an estimated £1.7 million in social value, demonstrating the significant impact that community-based organisations can have when provided with the resources and support needed to succeed.
At Al-Wahab Foundation, supporting families and communities is at the heart of everything we do.
Whether delivering local community projects in the UK or humanitarian programmes overseas, our mission remains the same: helping people overcome hardship and build brighter futures for themselves and their families.
Across countries such as Uganda, Pakistan and Afghanistan, the Foundation supports projects that improve living conditions, increase self-sufficiency and create opportunities for vulnerable communities.
This includes initiatives such as providing solar panels to homes without access to reliable electricity, allowing families to light their homes after dark, children to study safely and communities to improve their quality of life.
While the locations may differ, the underlying principle remains unchanged. We believe that everyone deserves access to dignity, opportunity and the support needed to thrive.
The success of this event demonstrates the value of partnership, collaboration and community action.
Whilst the supplies distributed on the day will eventually be used, the impact of the event extends far beyond the items themselves. It sends a powerful message that families facing challenges are not alone and that support is available within their community.
The partnership between Al-Wahab Foundation and FACT is an example of what can be achieved when organisations work together with a shared purpose. By combining resources and expertise, it becomes possible to reach more families and provide meaningful assistance where it is needed most.
Looking ahead, Al-Wahab Foundation remains committed to supporting local initiatives that strengthen communities, improve wellbeing and create opportunities for families. We look forward to continuing to work alongside organisations such as FACT and exploring further ways to support those who need it most.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Aghileh Djafari, Jackie, the volunteers, Wealdstone Methodist Church, and everyone who contributed to making the day a success.
Most importantly, we thank the families who attended. Their resilience, determination and commitment to creating better futures for their children continue to inspire the work we do every day.
Through partnerships such as this, communities become stronger, families feel supported and hope continues to grow.
