The month of Muharram instils a sense of spiritual reflection in the Muslims worldwide. Known as Muharram-ul-Haram, this sacred month reveals inspiring stories from Islamic history, filled with divine miracles, faith, and sacrifice.
One of its most blessed days in the month of Muharram is Ashura, the 10th of Muharram. It is a day that Muslims commemorate by increasing their worshipping, with fasting, and remembrance. You can explore more about this sacred time in our blog on 4 things to know about Muharram.
Why is Muharram So Special?
Muharram is one of the four sacred months mentioned in the Qur’an:
“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred.” – (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:36)
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) referred to Muharram as:
“The Sacred Month of Allah.” – (Sahih Muslim)
The name of the month “Muharram,” meaning “forbidden,” implies that acts of warfare and sin are especially prohibited, highlighting the importance of peace and righteousness during this time.
Renowned scholars such as Ibn Katheer have elaborated that Allah has honoured certain times, places, and people, among them are sacred months like Muharram. For those with insight, these moments offer rare opportunities for spiritual growth. It’s also an ideal time to engage in charity—discover the spiritual benefits of charity in Muharram and multiply your rewards.
The Expected Date of Ashura in 2025
In 2025, the Day of Ashura is expected to fall on Tuesday, July 8th, depending on the moon sighting. Muslims are encouraged to also fast on the 9th of Muharram (Monday, July 7th) alongside the 10th. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:
“If I live till next year, I will definitely fast on the 9th [as well].” – (Sahih Muslim)
This practice helps distinguish the Islamic fast from that of earlier traditions and increases reward through additional devotion. If you’re looking for a way to serve during these blessed days, consider contributing to our Muharram Appeal to support those in need.

The Story of Prophet Musa (A.S.): A Triumph of Faith
Imagine the Israelites trapped between the mighty Red Sea and the advancing army of Pharaoh. Fear echoed among the people, but Prophet Musa (A.S) stood firm, placing his complete trust in Allah. With the command of Allah (SWT), the sea split, elevating walls of water on either side while creating a safe passage. The Israelites crossed, and Pharaoh’s tyranny was drowned in the justice of Allah (SWT).
In gratitude, Hazrat Musa (A.S) fasted on the 10th of Muharram. When the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) learned of this, he said:
“We are closer to Musa than they are.” – (Sahih al-Bukhari)
He then encouraged Muslims to fast on this day — a beautiful symbol of connection across generations of faith.
The Martyrdom of Imam Hussain (R.A.)
Ashura also marks a heart-breaking yet an exemplary chapter of the Battle of Karbala. On this day, Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A), the beloved grandson of the Prophet (ﷺ), stood bravely against the tyrant Yazid, refusing to legitimize oppression with his allegiance.
Despite being hungry and surrounded, Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A) and his followers chose martyrdom over compromising in the path of Allah (SWT). His last moments reflected the spirit of dignity and submission to Allah’s will. His sacrifice was a timeless reminder to uphold justice, faith, and truth even in the face of death.
Other Historic Events on Ashura
Ashura is also believed to be the day when Prophet Nuh’s (A.S) Ark came to rest on Mount Judiyy, marking the end of the great flood. Like Prophet Musa (A.S), Prophet Nuh (A.S) fasted in gratitude to Allah, setting a spiritual example to this day. Reflecting on this, many Muslims increase charitable actions — donating food and water in Muharram is a beautiful way to follow prophetic footsteps.
Rewards & Significance of Fasting on Ashura
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:
“Fasting the day of Ashura, I hope that Allah will accept it as an expiation for the previous year’s sins.” – (Sahih Muslim)
He also stated:
“The best of fasting after Ramadan is fasting Allah’s month of Muharram.” – (Sahih Muslim)
According to Ibn Abbas (R.A):
“I never saw Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) so keen to fast any day and give it priority over any other than this day, the Day of Ashura, and this month, meaning Ramadan.” – (Sahih al-Bukhari)
Fasting on the 9th and 10th of Muharram is a source of seeking mercy, strengthening faith, and expressing gratitude with submission to Allah.
